The Claims Process: Step by Step
Filing an insurance claim can feel overwhelming, especially after a stressful event. Understanding the process in advance helps you act quickly and confidently when you need to.
Report the Incident Promptly
Notify your insurance broker or insurer as soon as possible after the incident occurs. Most policies require you to report claims within a specific timeframe โ often 24 to 72 hours for urgent matters. Delaying notification can jeopardise your claim.
Document Everything
Take photos and videos of all damage before any repairs are made. Gather supporting documents: police reports (for theft or accidents), medical records (for health or accident claims), receipts for damaged items, and witness statements if applicable.
Complete the Claim Form
Your insurer will provide an official claim form. Complete it accurately and thoroughly. Include all relevant details about the incident, the damage, and any third parties involved. Inaccurate or incomplete forms can delay processing.
Loss Adjuster Assessment
For significant claims, the insurer may appoint a loss adjuster โ an independent professional who assesses the extent of the damage and verifies the claim. Cooperate fully and provide access to the damaged property or relevant records.
Claim Review and Decision
The insurer reviews all submitted documentation and the loss adjuster's report. They will either approve the claim, request additional information, or decline the claim with a written explanation. This process can take days to several weeks depending on the complexity.
Settlement Payment
Once approved, your insurer will issue payment for the covered amount minus your deductible. Payment may be made directly to you, to a repair contractor, or to a medical provider depending on the type of claim.
Common Reasons Claims Are Delayed or Denied
Understanding why claims can be delayed or denied helps you avoid common pitfalls:
- Late notification: Failing to report the incident within the required timeframe
- Insufficient documentation: Not providing enough evidence to support the claim
- Policy exclusions: The cause of loss is excluded under your policy (e.g., flood damage on a policy without flood coverage)
- Misrepresentation: Providing inaccurate information on the claim form
- Lapsed policy: Your policy was not active at the time of the incident
- Wear and tear: Damage resulting from gradual deterioration rather than a sudden event
